Modern facility to strengthen policing in key Garo Hills junction; recruitment of 3,000 police personnel in final stages
Jengjal, Nov 17: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed Jengjal Police Station which is being hailed as one of the state’s best-equipped and most strategically located police stations.
The police station—first notified in 2017—had been functioning from a rented Assam-type house until now. The new building, he said, will significantly enhance police efficiency.
Top officials including Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang, West Garo Hills SP Abraham T. Sangma, DIG (Western Range) J.F.K Marak, West Garo Hills DC Vibhor Aggarwal and MIDC Chairman James K. Sangma were present at the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the new station complies with the Government of India’s standards and will serve as a model for future upgrades across Meghalaya. “We will ensure that all police stations in the state—old or new—are brought to the same standard,” he said, thanking local residents and Nokmas for donating land.
Sangma announced that the Police Infrastructure Renovation Fund is now enabling district police chiefs to take up repair and renovation works without waiting for state sanctions. “This has already helped speed up upgrades in many stations,” he said.
He also highlighted the government’s efforts to address manpower shortages. “Recruitment for over 3,000 vacancies is in the final stage of personal interviews. This is perhaps one of the largest recruitments in the state’s history,” he said.
Rs 50 crore sanctioned for Jengjal Airport upgrade
Calling Jengjal a critical hub for Garo Hills, the Chief Minister revealed that the state will sanction ₹50 crore within the month to the Airport Authority of India to begin work at Jengjal Airport, which was handed over earlier this year. Once completed, 19-seater Air Alliance aircraft will operate from the airport, prioritising Shillong–Tura flights.
He added that the government is scouting land in the area to host major events, given Jengjal’s growing importance.
Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang said the station marks a “major step forward” for the state police, with facilities including general rooms, lock-up, officer-in-charge’s room, child-friendly spaces and a women help desk. She noted the addition of community meeting spaces that will enhance police–public engagement.
“This building addresses immediate needs while preparing us for the future,” she said.
DIG J. F. K. Marak said the new police station building is a “significant step towards strengthening law enforcement infrastructure in the growing region”.
MIDC Chairman James K. Sangma called the new facility a “long-standing demand of the people” and said modern infrastructure is essential for modern policing. DC Vibhor Aggarwal described the station as a “milestone for law and order and overall development,” especially with Jengjal’s position as a link between three districts and the upcoming revival of the Baljek Airport.
The event featured performances by students of St. Anthony’s School and the Rhythm School of Music. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by West Garo Hills SP Abraham T. Sangma.
