Senapati, April 10: In a politically and symbolically significant visit, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh travelled by road to Senapati via Kangpokpi on Friday—his first such journey since the outbreak of unrest on May 3, 2023—signalling a push to restore normalcy and rebuild public confidence.
The Chief Minister attended a reception organised by civil society groups in Senapati, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho and legislators, including Awangbow Newmai, Tongbram Robindro Singh and J. Kumo Sha.
The programme opened on a sombre note, with a prayer and a one-minute silence in memory of two children killed in the recent Tronglaobi blast in Bishnupur district.
Addressing the gathering, Singh credited civil society organisations across Senapati, Mao and Kangpokpi for enabling the road journey after nearly three years of disruption. He described the visit as a collective step towards peace and normalcy.
Emphasising inclusive growth, the Chief Minister said Manipur’s progress depends on balanced development across all districts, not just Imphal.
“The state can move forward only when every region develops together,” he said, calling for unity across communities. He also reiterated the importance of safeguarding Manipur’s territorial integrity and fostering shared identity and cooperation.
Responding to local demands, Singh said the proposal for a medical college in Senapati would be placed before the State Cabinet. He also directed preparation of a detailed project report for improving the district’s sewerage system and assured that concerns over relocation of the Senapati Police Station would be examined. Plans for developing the Barak Festival site will be taken up in consultation with the Tourism Department, he added.
During the visit, the Chief Minister inaugurated several projects, including a multi-level parking and transportation hub at Senapati Bazar, 10 multi-purpose centres in PVTG areas, a primary health sub-centre building at Pudanamei, and a 3D digital dental laboratory. He also laid foundation stones for multiple infrastructure projects, including anganwadi centres, school classrooms, water facilities, community halls, and solid waste management systems across the district.
Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho praised the people of Senapati—comprising Mao, Maram, Poumai, Thangal and Zeliangrong communities—for their role in maintaining peace during a difficult period.
In a notable gesture during his return journey, the Chief Minister stopped at the residence of Kuki MLA Haokholet Kipgen at Hengbung in Kangpokpi district, underlining outreach efforts across communities.
The visit, marked by both development announcements and symbolic gestures, is being seen as a key step in the government’s attempt to rebuild trust and normalcy in the hill districts.
