SHILLONG, MAR 10: The administration of West Garo Hills on Tuesday extended the district-wide curfew for another 48 hours, keeping residents indoors from 12 am of March 11 to 12 am on March 13 as communal unrest tied to GHADC election nominations continues.
Issuing the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, district magistrate Vibhor Aggarwal said, “…(I) do hereby extend the curfew imposed within the entire jurisdiction of West Garo Hills for a further period of 48 hours. Accordingly, the curfew shall remain in force from 12 am on March 11 until 12 am on March 13, unless withdrawn earlier.”
“During the period of curfew, no person shall move outside their residence within the limits of West Garo Hills.”
He said incidents of violence and disturbance posed a serious threat to human life, public safety and property.
“Continuation of stringent preventive measures is necessary to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation of violence.”
The order directed that educational institutions, banks, shops, markets and offices will remain shut, except essential services—hospitals, pharmacies, emergency responders and utilities.
All law enforcement agencies, executive magistrates and police officers within the district are also directed to strictly enforce this order and take necessary action against any person found violating the curfew.
“Any violation risks penal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” the order further warned.
The extension follows police firing that killed two Chibinang residents, arson at Chibinang Bazar, and the DM’s request to the Army for flag marches in plain‑belt villages.
Mobile data services remain suspended for 48 hours across the district amid the law‑and‑order clampdown.
