SHILLONG, APR 18: Deputy Chief Minister and Nartiang legislator Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday said Wahiajer would welcome the proposed tourism project at Lumpongdeng Island if protesters continue to oppose it, asserting that “democracy” allows hunger strikes both for and against development.
Referring to the ongoing hunger strike by the Green Tech Foundation demanding scrapping of tourism projects on Lumpongdeng Island, Dhar said, “But there are people staging hunger strikes to drive away development. I told the Chief Minister, if they reject such development, divert it to Wahiajer — we are happy to welcome it.” “There are those who stage hunger strikes for development, and there are those who stage hunger strikes to reject development. That is democracy,” he added.
