Guwahati, March 16: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed a Special Observer for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, 2026, as part of measures to ensure the polls are conducted in a free and peaceful manner.
The Commission has appointed Manjeet Singh, a retired IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, as the Special Observer for Assam. The appointment has been made under the powers vested in the ECI under Article 324 of the Constitution of India.
According to officials, the Special Observer will visit Assam regularly to review poll preparedness and monitor the conduct of the elections across the state. He will also provide inputs and feedback to the Commission whenever required.
The move comes a day after the ECI announced the election schedule for Assam and four other states/Union Territories on March 15.
Polling for the Assam Assembly elections will be held on April 9, 2026, while counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, 2026.
Officials said the Special Observer will function as the “eyes and ears” of the Commission on the ground and help strengthen monitoring mechanisms during the election process.
