Guwahati, June 27: Fresh tensions have erupted along the disputed Assam-Meghalaya border in the Tapatt area of West Karbi Anglong district, following a violent confrontation between residents from both the states. The clash has left one person injured and a structure burned.
The incident was sparked by a large-scale red sandalwood plantation drive initiated by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in the Tapatt region. However, this was met with strong opposition from some residents on the Meghalaya side, who asserted historical claims over the land and had been actively obstructing the planting for several days.

A planned peace dialogue at Tapatt Primary School, intended to de-escalate the situation, was derailed before it could even begin. Reports indicate that several individuals from Meghalaya side allegedly uprooted the newly planted saplings and started to leave the area. This act led to outrage among the local Karbi population, leading to a direct confrontation between the two communities.
During the escalating clash, a shelter on the Assam side of the border was reportedly set ablaze by the group from Meghalaya. One individual, identified as Chandra Terang, sustained injuries in the ensuing violence.

As the situation spiralled, Assam Police intervened and used tear gas and fired 10 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the crowd and bring the area under control.
Top officials, including West Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner Sarangpani Sharma and Superintendent of Police Idronil Barua, quickly arrived at the scene and successfully managed to de-escalate the situation.
