Dibrugarh, June 16: A gas leak at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) well in Assam’s Sivasagar district has continued unabated for the fifth consecutive day, prompting the evacuation of around 70 families to a relief camp in Bhati Bongaon.
The leak began on June 12 following a powerful explosion at Well No. RDS-147 under ONGC’s Rudrasagar oil field in Bhatiapar. The blast triggered widespread panic as natural gas started gushing out with a deafening roar, audible up to 3–4 kilometers away.
Taking control of the situation, a high-level team led by ONGC Director (Technology and Field Services) Vikram Saxena arrived on Saturday to oversee containment efforts.
“The team has been working at the site to contain the gas leaking from the well. All necessary precautionary measures have been taken,” an ONGC official said.
As a safety measure, the evacuated families have been provided with shelter, food, drinking water, and medical support at the relief camp. A police team is stationed at the site to ensure security, and an ambulance with medical staff remains on standby to respond to any emergencies.
Efforts to cap the blowout and restore safety are ongoing.
