GSU urges Education Minister to increase seats in colleges for financially-challenged students

Shillong, May 19: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has appealed to the state Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma to increase the number of seats in Tura Government College and other government colleges as well as private colleges across the state for economically vulnerable students.

In a letter to the education minister, GSU raised concerns over the acute shortage of affordable higher education opportunities for students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds in Meghalaya, particularly in the Garo Hills region.

It noted that Tura Government College is a critical institution for students from rural and tribal communities who cannot afford the exorbitant fees charged by private colleges, however, due to ‘severely limited number of seats’, hundreds of meritorious students are denied admission annually. “This forces them to either abandon their educational aspirations or take on crippling financial burdens to enroll in private institutions, which is an impossible choice for families already struggling with poverty,” GSU president, Teng’sak Gabil Momin, said.

To address this ‘systemic issue’, Momin suggested for increasing seats in all departments (Arts, Science, Commerce) at Tura Government College to accommodate more students; allocate funds for constructing additional classrooms, laboratories, and hiring qualified faculty to support the expansion; introduce need-based scholarships and fee waivers for students from BPL families.

Seeking inclusive and equitable education, GSU urged the minister to empower marginalized youth, reduce interstate migration for education, and foster socio-economic development in Meghalaya.
