Shillong, Oct 31: Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla has emphasized the need for a change in approach to tackle the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS in the state.
The minister made these remarks while discussing the alarming number of AIDS cases in Meghalaya.
Shylla highlighted that the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS prevents people from coming forward to get tested and treated.
He cited an instance where a student was thrown out of school after it was discovered that the student’s mother was HIV positive.

“We have to think from their angle and understand the challenges they face,” the minister said.
To address this issue, Shylla suggested organizing more awareness programs that focus not only on HIV patients but also on the general public.
“We need to create awareness and acceptance among the people so that they can work together to solve the problem,” he said.
The minister also asserted the importance of changing the approach to tackling HIV/AIDS, stating that merely providing funds is not enough.
Instead, he urged other MLAs to work together to spread awareness and encourage people to get tested and treated.

Shylla pointed out that there are sufficient funds available for HIV/AIDS programs, but what is needed is a change in approach.
He suggested that people living with HIV/AIDS should be encouraged to come forward and share their experiences to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
The minister also highlighted the importance of informing people that HIV/AIDS is not a death sentence and that with proper treatment, people can live a respected life.
“We need to create awareness that there is a way of treatment, and people can live a normal life,” he said.
