Guwahati, April 26: With heavy rainfall forecast over the next 48 hours, the Assam government has ramped up emergency preparedness in Guwahati, activating flood control and disaster response measures across the city.
Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota on Saturday chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials to assess readiness for potential flooding, waterlogging, and landslides. The administration has ordered round-the-clock deployment of pumps, desilting teams, and emergency response units to minimize disruption.
Authorities said more than 300 locations across the city have been identified as landslide-prone zones and are under close surveillance. Public awareness campaigns are also being intensified in vulnerable areas.
Key focus areas include:
Desilting of major drains and ensuring operational readiness of pumping stations
Guard wall construction and monitoring along the Bharalu River and key drainage channels
Covering open drains and manholes, and installing barricades at high-risk spots.
Traffic management plans, including diversions, to tackle congestion during waterlogging.
The Guwahati City Traffic Police flagged the risk of severe congestion if roads are inundated, prompting authorities to prepare alternative traffic routes to maintain essential services.
Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) presented rainfall forecasts and response strategies, stressing coordinated action and real-time monitoring.
A review of critical drainage networks—covering Silsaku, Juripar, Bharalu, Bahini, Basistha, Pamohi, and the Jorabat–Byrnihat corridor—was also undertaken. Vulnerable highway stretches, including Jalukbari–Gorchuk and areas near major hospitals, were assessed for cross-drainage efficiency.
The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and GMDA have been directed to ensure 24×7 operation of super suckers and pumping machinery.
Public Advisory
Residents have been urged to:
Avoid waterlogged and flood-prone areas
Stay away from open drains, rivers, and landslide zones
Plan travel carefully and follow official advisories.
Authorities emphasized that public cooperation will be critical in reducing risks during the expected spell of heavy rain.
