Resubelpara, July 28: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma underlined that the state’s development model rests on empowering people through community participation while driving growth in infrastructure, women’s empowerment, and youth entrepreneurship.
“We are working in unison with all sections of society to realise our ambitious goal of building a 10-billion-dollar economy,” he said while inaugurating two new bridges.
The two new bridges one connecting Chidaret to Thapa Bazar and the other on the Bajengdoba–Resubelpara road — are expected to significantly ease transportation for thousands of residents.
“Bridges and roads are not just about connectivity — they are lifelines that enable access to markets, healthcare, and education. These bridges will alleviate hardships, especially during the monsoon,” the Chief Minister noted.
Highlighting the government’s infrastructure push, Sangma pointed out that in the last seven years, road infrastructure funding has grown to nearly ₹5,000 crore — far surpassing what previous governments achieved in two decades.
He announced that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has lauded Meghalaya’s development model in a widely read article titled “The Meghalaya Story: Realising Aspirations”, published in The Hindustan Times.
“The Finance Minister’s recognition is a testimony to our collective progress. We are more determined than ever to continue building a Meghalaya that is resilient, inclusive, and future-ready,” Sangma added.
“During her recent three-day visit to Meghalaya, the Hon’ble Finance Minister took time to interact with farmers, women, and youth from across the state,” Sangma said. “She saw firsthand the interventions our government has implemented to support different segments of society — from farming to entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment. Her article speaks volumes about Meghalaya’s silent revolution and the transformation that is taking place.”
In her opinion piece, Sitharaman described Meghalaya as a state undergoing a quiet yet impactful transformation — blending infrastructure growth with community-driven development. She commended initiatives to strengthen road connectivity, empower self-help groups (SHGs), boost tourism infrastructure, and expand agri-business potential through programmes like Megha-LAMP.
The Finance Minister recalled visiting SHGs producing organic turmeric, pickles, and handloom products, and meeting farmers exporting pineapples to Dubai — examples of the entrepreneurial energy reshaping the grassroots economy.
