Uriamghat eviction drive in Assam set to displace 2,000 families

Must read

Guwahati, July 28: After similar drives in Dhubri and Goalpara, the Assam government is set to launch a massive eviction operation in upper Assam’s Golaghat district to clear 10,000 bighas (about 3,300 acres) of land in the Rengma Reserve Forest at Uriamghat.

The eviction, scheduled for Tuesday, is expected to affect nearly 2,000 families. Many families belonging to the Miya Muslim community have reportedly fled the area, seeking shelter elsewhere in Assam, but are facing difficulties due to strict police and security checks.

Officials said a force of nearly 700–800 personnel — including Assam Police, CRPF, and Forest Department teams — has been deployed in and around the reserve forest, marking one of the largest preparatory operations in recent months. Heavy machinery such as bulldozers and excavators has been stationed to remove alleged encroachers.

The operation follows extensive land surveys across 30 villages in the Sarupathar sub-division of the reserve forest, situated along the sensitive Assam–Nagaland border. Authorities estimate that most encroachers are from districts such as Nagaon, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Barpeta, Hojai, Cachar, as well as from West Bengal and Bihar, with a significant number from the minority community.

The drive comes just days after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s visit to Uriamghat on July 25. The Chief Minister stated that 70% of the identified encroachers had already vacated voluntarily, reiterating his government’s resolve to reclaim forest and government land.

Earlier, on July 21, Sarma said that in the last four years, the state had cleared 1.29 lakh bighas (over 42,500 acres) of encroached land, while nearly 29 lakh bighas (over 9.5 lakh acres) remain under encroachment.

Meanwhile, the Nagaland government has issued an advisory to bordering districts, asking them to remain on high alert and prevent any spillover of displaced families into its territory during the eviction.
