International organic event opens in Shillong, positions Northeast as emerging global organic hub

Must read

Shillong, Nov 29: A major international organic event opened in Shillong on Friday, signalling a renewed push to position Northeast India as a global centre for organic agriculture. The four-day programme (Nov 28–Dec 1) brings together global buyers, organic experts, youth leaders, and farmer groups for a series of high-level engagements, including the APEDA Buyer–Seller Meet, the first Northeast India Organic Week, and the 4th IFOAM World Organic Youth Summit.

Organised by the Meghalaya Agriculture Department in collaboration with national and international partners, the event aims to boost export opportunities, deepen global market linkages, and showcase the region’s growing organic ecosystem. Officials said the initiative will help unlock the Northeast’s untapped potential by connecting local producers directly with international markets.

Speaking at the inauguration held at Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong, dignitaries said the Northeast’s rich biodiversity, traditional farming heritage, and naturally low chemical use give the region a strong comparative advantage. “The Northeast is well-placed to lead India’s organic movement. Its traditional practices already meet global expectations,” an official noted.

A key highlight is the APEDA Buyer–Seller Meet, which is facilitating direct interactions between international buyers and producers from the Northeast—creating immediate prospects for export tie-ups. The Northeast India Organic Week is also drawing attention with curated showcases of organic produce, indigenous foods, and sustainable innovations.

Adding global youth engagement to the event, the 4th IFOAM World Organic Youth Summit has convened young leaders from several countries to discuss climate resilience, regenerative agriculture, and circular economy models. The summit features workshops, cultural exchanges, and panel discussions throughout the week.

Delegates will also travel to organic farms and clusters across Meghalaya to study best practices and interact with farmer groups, a move organisers say is key to building trust and long-term collaboration.

The event is expected to significantly raise the Northeast’s visibility in global organic markets and further strengthen India’s position as a major player in the international organic sector.
