SHILLONG, JUL 5: The Jaintia National Council on Saturday condemned the tragic death of Kyrshan Lamurong in East Jaiñtia Hills and demanded that police conduct a swift, impartial and transparent investigation into the case.
In a statement, the JNC said the incident is not only a criminal matter but also a serious warning on public safety.
“The loss of one life in such a shocking manner has caused deep pain and anger among the people, and JNC stands firmly with the bereaved family in this hour of grief and send our deepest condolences,” the council said.
The JNC said it will closely monitor the investigation and expects regular public updates from authorities until justice is delivered.
“We demand that the police conduct a swift, impartial and transparent investigation and ensure that all those responsible for this crime are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” it stated.
The council linked the killing to what it called failures in local monitoring, including unregulated movement and unknown residency in several villages.
It said it has repeatedly urged Dorbar Shnong, headmen, village authorities and local bodies to remain alert and verify newcomers, and to ensure that no person resides or works in a village without informing the shnong and local institutions. “This is a matter of public safety, and it must be treated with utmost seriousness,” the JNC said.
“Kyrshan’s death exposes a dangerous gap in local safety and community oversight where unknown and unverified people are allowed to live and move freely in our villages. Repeated warnings and appeals for vigilance have been ignored for too long; the time for gentle reminders is over. Village safety is a non‑negotiable priority.”
Citing the urgency, the JNC announced that all its units, Circles and Zones have been authorized to immediately begin lawful verification operations across Jaintia Hills to identify and register every non-tribal person residing in the area. “These operations will check identity, place of residence, occupation, and any relevant records, no exceptions, no delays,” the council said.
It added that village leaders and dorbar shnong must cooperate fully.
“We will not sit by while village heads and local institutions repeatedly fail to prevent tragedies. This is an operational directive from the JNC CEC — start now, and leave no one unchecked.”
The JNC also warned that it will escalate action if people continue to be harmed due to lax monitoring. It called on villagers, headmen, dorbar shnong, youth bodies and local institutions to strengthen vigilance at entry points and within villages, record arrivals, verify work and residence, and report suspicious behaviour to JNC units and law enforcement.
“This is urgent community self‑defence,” it said.
