Guwahati, Sep 11: Forest Martyrs’ Day was solemnly observed at Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve on Thursday, paying tribute to the forest personnel who laid down their lives protecting Assam’s rich biodiversity.

The commemorative event, held at the Kohora Convention Centre, brought together forest officials, frontline staff, and families of martyrs. The day began with floral tributes at the Shahid Smarak, Kohora Social Forestry Park, where 25 forest martyrs of Kaziranga in the past decade were remembered. Families joined colleagues in honouring the extraordinary courage of those who guarded Kaziranga’s wildlife against poachers, floods, and other perils.
As part of the programme, meritorious students from frontline families were felicitated—a gesture symbolising the department’s commitment to supporting the next generation while honouring the sacrifices of the past.
Officials said the observance was not only about remembrance but also about renewing commitment to conservation.
Kaziranga’s record of sacrifice is long and painful. From the pioneering ranger Mahi Miri, who died in 1939 of blackwater fever after clearing poacher camps and aiding villagers during floods, to more recent casualties such as Apurba Momin, killed by a rhino in April 2024, the park’s history reflects both bravery and loss. Rangers have fallen to poachers’ bullets, deadly floods, animal attacks, road accidents, and occupational hazards while on duty.
International reports underline the risks: between 2006 and 2021, over 2,351 rangers died worldwide in the line of duty, with Asia and Africa accounting for more than 80% of these fatalities. Causes ranged from homicides and animal attacks to accidents and occupational illnesses, while mental health concerns and rising suicides among rangers are emerging as critical challenges.
Kaziranga, home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinos, epitomises both India’s conservation successes and the human cost of safeguarding nature.
The day ended with a pledge of gratitude and remembrance, as officials vowed to strengthen conservation partnerships across Assam and the Northeast so that the sacrifices of the fallen continue to inspire future generations.
