Imphal, Jan 28: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing concern over the alleged assault on Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra during a meeting at Manipur’s Kangla Fort on January 24.
In the letter, Kharge criticized the continued silence and inaction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as an injustice to the people of the northeastern state. He urged Shah to take immediate action to restore democracy and the rule of law in Manipur.
On January 25, a distressing incident unfolded at Kangla Fort in Imphal, where three Manipur MLAs, including state Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh and two from the ruling BJP, were reportedly subjected to physical assault and compelled to take an oath by members of the radical Meitei group, Arambai Tenggol.
“Many members present in the meeting were compelled and coerced to attend this meeting by an armed group. Not only that, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President, who is an MLA from Wangkhem constituency, Keisham Meghachandra Singh, was brutally assaulted and tortured during this meeting,” the Congress President stated in his letter.
“All these events point to a complete collapse of the administration in Manipur. The continuing silence and inaction of the Prime Minister is an injustice to the people of Manipur,” the Congress leader said.
