KSU files complaint against illegal settlers in Mahadev Khola

Must read

Shillong, July 6: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has filed a complaint in the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, East Khasi Hills, regarding the presence of illegal settlers in Mahadev Khola. According to a recent statement issued by the union, the Forest department had allocated land for the construction of a Hindu temple at Mahadev Khola back in 1923 solely for religious purposes, not for any form of settlement.

The KSU claims to have discovered around 30-40 households occupied by individuals from non-indigenous backgrounds, as well as numerous shopkeepers lacking valid documentation, residing in the area. Additionally, the union points out that the settlement is situated within a forest area, thereby excluding the dorbar shnong from having any jurisdiction or authority over the matter.

Furthermore, the union has uncovered evidence of rampant garbage and waste disposal originating from the houses, ultimately polluting nearby streams. In addition to environmental concerns, the union highlights the fact that the area has become a hub for drug-related activities, with multiple reports of robberies being filed.

In light of these findings, the KSU has taken swift action by lodging a formal complaint with the Divisional Forest Officer, urging immediate intervention to address the issue of illegal settlers at Mahadev Khola.
