Shillong, March 15: The industrial marked region of Mendipathar in North Garo Hills, that had fallen on hard times for many years, is getting a fresh lease of life with global industrial giant Pepsico being given the green light by the Conrad K Sangma government to set up a major coke beverage unit that will cater to the soft drinks demand in Meghalaya, Assam and even North Bengal.

Chief minister Conrad K Sangma today handed over the land agreement papers to Pepsico’s holding company Varun Beverages for setting up of their industrial unit at Mendipathar in North Garo Hills.

Varun Beverages is the holding company that runs the different Pepsi plants all over the country.

“Today is a special day for Garo Hills and the state because for the very first time a major global company is establishing its footprint which will have long term benefits for development of the region,” said Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

The coming up of Pepsico’s first major industry in Mendipathar will be a record of sorts for the government since no factory or industry took off for many years even after the state government established the area as an industrial zone.

“Pepsico will invest around 185 crores for its factory here in Mendipathar and within 12 months it is expected to be ready with a production line. This factory will lead to development activities including road expansion and a lot of employment opportunities for the local people. Moreover, local entrepreneurs will also get the benefit of producing and packaging their products for export,” said the chief minister.

Mendipathar has the biggest advantage in the state for trade and commerce because if the presence of the only railway connection. Thanks to the railways, there is a booming economic activity in the area with tons of local products from Garo Hills, such as fruits like jackfruits and bananas and fresh vegetables, making their way to the Guwahati markets every morning by train from Mendipathar station.
