Imphal, April 18: Tensions surged across Manipur’s Valley region as fresh night protests broke out over the killing of two children in the Tronglaobi incident, triggering clashes between demonstrators and security forces and deepening unrest in multiple districts.
Large crowds defied curfew at Khurai Lamlong Bazar in Imphal East on Friday night, taking to the streets and raising slogans demanding justice. The protests quickly turned confrontational, prompting security forces to intervene with tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse the gathering.
Several people were injured in the clashes and later admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) for treatment.
The unrest has spread across key Valley districts, with civil society organisations announcing a series of intensified agitations despite the case being handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Public anger continues to mount, particularly in Bishnupur district, where the incident occurred and which has emerged as the epicentre of the protests.
Authorities have relaxed curfew in a phased manner to allow limited movement. In Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts, restrictions have been eased from 5 am to 5 pm.
However, in Bishnupur, curfew relaxation has been limited to just five hours—from 5 am to 10 am—reflecting the heightened sensitivity in the district.
Despite partial relaxations, normal life remains severely disrupted.
Protesters enforced road blockades and shutdowns across Bishnupur, with key routes near Bishnupur Bazar completely sealed, forcing commuters to turn back. Similar disruptions were reported in Imphal East, where areas including Kongba Bazar, Wangkhei, Andro Parking, and Kongpal witnessed sudden blockades.
With educational institutions shut and mobile internet services still suspended across Valley districts, the situation remains volatile.
Frequent protests and sporadic clashes with security forces have become a near-daily occurrence, underscoring the deepening crisis and growing public unrest in the state.
