“No VFX, No Wires”: Raj Sangma promises raw action in Assamese debut ‘Ram’

From a Garo background, with Hajong and Bodo ties, Sangma aims to reflect Northeast’s cultural diversity on screen

Guwahati, April 18: In a move set to add a fresh edge to Assamese cinema, Garo actor Raj Sangma is gearing up for his debut in the industry with the action-driven film Ram, slated for release across Assam on April 24.

The 32-year-old actor, known for his martial arts background, promises a departure from conventional screen action, bringing what he describes as “raw and real” fight sequences without the use of VFX or wirework. This will be his third film overall, following his debut in the Hindi film Nach Romioi (2019) and the Adivasi feature Hero (2022).

Drawing inspiration from global action icons like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Tony Jaa, Sangma said his journey in martial arts spans nearly two decades and has shaped his cinematic vision. “If I ever became an actor, I would do action films—and that remains my goal,” he said.
Speaking about Ram, Sangma noted that while the film is action-centric, it is anchored in an emotional narrative revolving around relationships and character development. “The theme is action, but the story is very beautiful. I want audiences to experience it in theatres,” he added.

He also credited Assamese cinema veterans Ravi Sarma and Jatin Bora as key inspirations, even as he steps into the regional industry for the first time.
Having spent most of his life in Assam despite hailing from Meghalaya, Sangma’s journey reflects the region’s cultural interconnections. Coming from a diverse background—Garo roots, a Hajong mother, and a Bodo wife—he said he hopes to tell stories that reflect the Northeast’s rich cultural mosaic.

As anticipation builds ahead of the film’s release, Sangma remains focused on audience reception. “This is my debut in Assamese cinema, so how I present myself on screen is very important,” he said, adding a message for viewers: “If you have the power to bring change, use it for a good cause.”
