Must read

Imphal, May 16: Amid rising tensions in Manipur following the killing of three church leaders in an ambush, several tribal and civil society organisations have put forward a series of demands seeking protection for tribal communities and religious leaders.

Hundreds of Kuki-Zo people on Friday paid their last respects to the slain church leaders, whose mortal remains were laid to rest at Brigadier M. Thomas Ground in Kangpokpi district.

The organisations have demanded a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the killings, immediate identification and prosecution of all perpetrators and conspirators, and permanent security arrangements for civilians and religious leaders in vulnerable areas.

Among the key demands are the establishment of special security zones, expedited political engagement with Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups, official recognition of the alleged persecution of tribal communities, and a separate administration for tribals in Manipur.

The deceased were identified as Reverend Vumthang Sitlhou, former general secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention and a resident of Taloulong village in Kangpokpi district; Reverend Kaigoulun Lhouvum of Keithelmanbi Military Colony, Kangpokpi; and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou, also from Keithelmanbi Military Colony.

Meanwhile, Naga organisations, including the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM), have also raised demands following the death of Wilson Thanga, who was killed in an ambush in Noney district on the same day.

The organisations demanded strict action against those responsible and said the deceased’s body would not be claimed until the government provides firm assurance that the attackers will be identified and arrested.
