Manipur: Process to capture biometric details of illegal Myanmar immigrants begins

Imphal, July 29: The process of capturing the biometric details of illegal Myanmar immigrants has started in Manipur from Saturday onwards.

Peter Salam, Joint Secretary (Home), in a letter has directed that the campaign for capturing biometric data of illegal migrants in the state of Manipur is to be completed by the end of September 2023.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has deputed a team from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to train and handhold the state government officials.

On July 26, a training cum hand holding programme of all the Deputy commissioners and Superintendents of police on biometric capture of illegal immigrants was held.

Manipur has been caught in a series of ethnic strife since May 3. Earlier, the government of India had asked the governments of Manipur and Mizoram to carry out the exercise and wrap the same by September, this year.

Meanwhile, at least seven Myanmar nationals have received treatment for bullet and explosive injuries at Churachandpur District Hospital in Manipur.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh earlier had said that Myanmar immigrants are responsible for deforestation, poppy cultivation, and drug menace in the state.
