Nongkrem, Oct 16: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday attended the inauguration of the newly constructed synthetic football turf at Madan Centre Playground, Kharbuli, Nongkrem as the chief guest.
The project was implemented under the Khelo India Scheme by the State Sports Council Meghalaya, Shillong, and was sanctioned in 2020–21.
The facility features a full synthetic football turf, modern drainage, chain link fencing, and a VIP rostrum cum players’ dressing rooms.

The inauguration was also attended by Wailadmiki Shylla, Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, former MLA Lambor Malngiang, Dr. Balajied Sing Syiem, Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Manhiam Marbaniang, Chief Engineer, State Sports Council Meghalaya, and other dignitaries.
The event commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a dance performance by school students.
In his address, the chief minister expressed his happiness at the completion of the synthetic football turf and highlighted the government’s commitment to youth development in Meghalaya.
He noted that the state has a predominantly young population and stressed the importance of investing in opportunities that nurture youth, including education, infrastructure, and sports.

He emphasized that sports teach discipline, hard work, and sportsmanship, and noted that over the last seven years, more than 70% of the state’s current sports infrastructure has been developed.
Sangma also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand grassroots sports programs, including block-level leagues and tournaments, which encourage youth participation, physical activity, and engagement in positive activities.
He urged students and local youth to make full use of the facility, maintain it responsibly, and seize the opportunities to develop their sporting skills.
Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs Wailadmiki Shylla commended the chief minister’s leadership and hands-on involvement in development projects.
He highlighted government initiatives supporting athletes, young entrepreneurs, musicians, and youth across Meghalaya, including training, financial support, and employment opportunities.
He also mentioned Meghalaya’s upcoming opportunity to host the National Games in 2027, providing young athletes exposure and access to international-standard facilities.
Former MLA Lambor Malngiang thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning the project during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and reflected on the transformation of the playground since the foundation stone was laid in December 2021.
He expressed his gratitude for the continued support in infrastructure and youth development in his constituency.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the headman of Kharbuli, C. Kharbuli, who expressed gratitude to the chief minister, ministers, dignitaries, and officials involved in the project for their guidance and support.
The project is expected to significantly enhance participation in football and other sports in Nongkrem and surrounding areas.
