Tura, May 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma was felicitated by the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers Association (AGHSSASTA-CB) on Saturday in recognition of his government’s efforts towards strengthening the education sector and addressing issues concerning SSA teachers in the state.
The felicitation programme was held at Matchakolgre LP School Playground in Tura and attended by teachers, education officials, community leaders and members of the public from across Garo Hills.
During the programme, the Chief Minister launched the MBOSE E-Office Management System and Accounting System, a unified digital dashboard aimed at improving financial management, transparency and institutional accountability within the education system.
He also launched the Chief Minister’s Leadership in Education and Development (CM LEAD) Fellowship, a state initiative designed to bring young professionals into the education sector to support innovation, governance and implementation of educational programmes across Meghalaya’s 12 districts.
According to officials, the fellowship programme will work towards strengthening learning outcomes in nearly 8,000 government and government-aided schools across the state.
In another key initiative, Sangma flagged off 27 vehicles intended to improve field-level monitoring and mobility of education officials across districts.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said education remained one of the highest priorities of the government and acknowledged the role played by teachers and officials in the sector.
“Many times, the hard work of officials and teachers goes unrecognised and unappreciated despite the immense responsibilities they shoulder,” he said.
Referring to the late P. A. Sangma’s commitment to education, the Chief Minister said reforms in the sector were being guided by principles of service and quality learning.
Describing the education system as “highly complex”, he said reforms required sustained efforts at multiple levels.
Sangma also spoke on long-standing issues faced by SSA teachers, stating that their concerns extended beyond salaries to issues of “dignity and security”.
He credited recent improvements in SSLC examination results to various government interventions, including the CM IMPACT guidebooks, and stressed the importance of conceptual learning over rote memorisation.
“There is a big difference between simply knowing the answer and truly understanding the concept,” he said, while urging teachers to focus on improving the quality of learning outcomes among students.
Highlighting the importance of grassroots monitoring, the Chief Minister said education officials should regularly conduct surprise school visits to assess infrastructure, teaching quality and student needs.
“Real improvement in quality must happen at the micro level — not just at the school level, but at the level of every individual student,” he added.
He also urged teachers to renew their sense of purpose and prioritise the development of children in their classrooms.
Commissioner and Secretary of the Education Department Vijay Kumar Mantri highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to improve governance, transparency and technological integration in the education sector.
Meanwhile, AGHSSASTA-CB president Labingstone G. Momin thanked the state government for addressing long-pending concerns of SSA teachers and investing in the education sector.
The programme began with an opening prayer by vice president Gilbirth Ch. Marak and a welcome address by association secretary Benabith Ch. Marak. Traditional cultural performances, including Wangala dance presentations by SSA teachers from Ampati, were also held during the event.
