SHILLONG, APR 8: The Jaintia Coal Miners and Dealers Association (JCMDA) has given a three-month ultimatum to the state government to formulate a scientific mining policy tailored to the region’s unique land tenure system and geological conditions.
Addressing the media after the public rally in East Jaintia Hills, JCMDA vice president and former Khliehriat legislator Justice Dkhar stated that the government has failed to come up with a suitable mining policy despite 12 years having passed since 2014.
“We demand the state government to immediately come up with a mining policy to protect the environment and ensure safety of the labourers,” he said.
Dkhar emphasized that the current policy, which focuses on open cast mining, is not feasible for the region.
“90 percent of our area is not suitable for open cast mining. We need other types of mining, and the government should modify the old system to protect the environment and ensure our livelihood,” he added.
The JCMDA has submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, urging him to address the issue affecting thousands of families dependent on coal mining.
“Till date, we have not received any relief or assistance for the families affected by coal mining, who are struggling to make ends meet.”
Dkhar warned that if the government fails to respond positively, the association will decide on its next course of action.
“We will not tolerate further delay. We want a policy that allows us to work, protects the environment, and ensures the safety of our labourers,” Dkhar said.
The association has also given copies of the memorandum to the two Deputy Chief Ministers – Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar – and MLAs from Jaintia Hills region, seeking their support in resolving the issue.
