Guwahati, Apr 8: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday launched a blistering attack on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks during a recent election rally in the state, escalating the political war of words ahead of polling.
Taking direct aim at Kharge, Sarma questioned his statements and called for a probe by central agencies into the allegations raised during the rally. He criticised Kharge’s remarks as “irresponsible” and accused him of making claims without verification.
“Why bring such documents without verifying them? You are now saying you will speak to the External Affairs Minister—why didn’t you do that earlier?” Sarma said while addressing reporters.
The chief minister also targeted Congress leader Pawan Khera, alleging that he had made accusations against him and his family and was now “on the run.” Sarma asserted that Assam Police would take necessary action and ensure that those involved are brought under the ambit of law.
Further intensifying his attack, Sarma alleged that the controversy may have links to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming that “false documents” could have been circulated within the party. He said legal cases would be filed against all those found responsible.
In a broader political swipe, Sarma criticised the Assam Congress, making remarks on its organisational character, and expressed confidence in the BJP’s electoral prospects.
“We are confident of winning up to 104 seats if voter turnout is high,” he said, referring to the upcoming Assembly elections.
Many Congress leaders have criticised Himanta Biswa Sarma for using abusive language in the public and in media and yet no action is being taken.
” He is using words we can’t even speak, and he is speaking publicly. He is the Chief Minister; this means he has no regard for the people of the state, the country, or the national media. The way he is using abusive language in public, and no action is being taken against him. How has the Election Commission remained silent?… Any Chief Minister abusing a member of any political party in this manner should be condemned… Intimidating and threatening opposition members has become the character of the BJP” Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel said.
Assam is set to go to polls on April 9 in a single phase across all 126 Assembly constituencies.
