Jowai, July 3: Days after Meghalaya figured at the bottom of the national Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0, the state government has maintained that the rankings do not accurately reflect the progress made in its education sector, arguing that a significant part of the shortfall stems from gaps in reporting rather than actual performance.
Addressing a programme in Sohkha on Friday, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said many schools across the state were losing valuable marks simply because achievements, facilities and initiatives already available on the ground were not being properly documented during the national assessment process.

According to the Chief Minister, Meghalaya lost nearly 100 marks because schools failed to report basic indicators such as reading spaces, cyber safety awareness programmes and other school-level initiatives.
Describing it as a “low-hanging opportunity,” Sangma urged school heads and the Education Department to strengthen reporting mechanisms, saying better documentation alone could substantially improve the state’s PGI ranking.
“We are losing many marks for simply not reporting these things. It doesn’t require additional investment. We are asking the Education Department and all heads of institutions to step up the reporting system,” he said.

Sangma maintained that Meghalaya has made significant progress in education over the past eight years, highlighting the upgradation of more than 2,000 schools, major investments in infrastructure and a sharp improvement in SSLC results, with pass percentages crossing 95 per cent in recent years.
“Transformation is happening. From infrastructure to results, we are moving in the right direction. Now we must ensure that our progress is properly captured and reflected,” he said.

The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening school infrastructure, improving connectivity and expanding educational opportunities across the state.
During the programme, he laid the foundation stone for the Sohkha Government Higher Secondary School, felicitated meritorious students and inaugurated a Children and Adolescent Library along with digital infrastructure at Sohkha Mission Village.
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla were also present at the programme.
