SHILLONG, APR 7: Meghalaya observed World Health Day with a renewed focus on universal healthcare, equitable access, and preventive care, under the theme “Together for Health: Stand with Science”.
Health authorities highlighted the state’s efforts to make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and inclusive.
Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills RM Kurbah stressed the importance of annual health check-ups, saying, “We need to take the expert knowledge that we receive. Science has transformed lives.”
JS Momin, DHS (MI), Department of Health and Family Welfare emphasized the state’s progress in healthcare, citing the strong health infrastructure, including 489 sub-centers, 110 PHCs, 23 CHCs, and 11 district hospitals.
“Screening is one of the effective tools, and helps in early treatment,” she said.
Experts urged community participation, particularly in preventive care and early diagnosis.
Patricia Mukhim, Editor, The Shillong Times, said, “Awareness is important. Health is more about the quality of life that we live. One of the strongest messages we can give is to go for early check-ups.”
Dr Robert R. Marak, District Nodal Officer, NP-NCD, stressed the importance of early screening for NCDs, saying, “We all need to work together collectively. We need to work more on non-communicable diseases.”
Health experts delivered talks on various topics, including women’s health, cancer screening, and heart care.
The NCD Cell conducted health screening for non-communicable diseases for individuals aged 30 years and above, as part of the commemoration.
