Shillong, May 25: Meghalaya’s growing footprint in western classical music gained international attention as Shillong musician Ambasal Cheran Momin represented the Northeast at the prestigious South Asian Symphony Foundation (SASF) Youth Workshop and Concert 2026, held in Bengaluru on May 23.
Momin, a double bassist from Shillong, Meghalaya, joined violinist Themsorin Hannah Ningshen from Manipur among young musicians from across South Asia during the week-long residency programme that concluded with a grand orchestral performance at the KE Auditorium, Christ University Central Campus, Bengaluru.
The event brought together young musicians, members of the South Asian Symphony Orchestra (SASO) and internationally acclaimed mentors for intensive orchestral training, artistic collaboration, and cultural exchange.
Their participation displayed the growing momentum of western classical music in Northeast India while placing Meghalaya’s artistic talent alongside emerging musicians performing at professional international standards.
Throughout the residency, participants underwent advanced orchestral rehearsals, sectional tutorials, ensemble coaching and collaborative artistic sessions designed to strengthen discipline, musical interpretation, teamwork and performance excellence.
The concluding concert featured celebrated classical repertoire including Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Piano Concerto No. 3, and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, drawing enthusiastic appreciation from audiences
