Shillong, Apr 28: After months of delay, Meghalaya Cricket Association’s (MCA) Indoor Cricket Academy at Kurkalang in Ri Bhoi district is all set for inauguration on Tuesday. The stadium will be virtually unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Sikkim along with similar indoor stadiums formally inaugurated across six northeastern states.
This marks the completion of a facility that had remained stalled for several months, primarily due to lack of power supply, which required installation of a transformer. The issue was brought to light after a surprise inspection by MCA President, James P. K. Sangma, last month.
The foundation stone of the facility in Ri-Bhoi and five neighbouring states (Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim) was virtually laid by the then BCCI President Roger Binny and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah in May 2024, with a target to complete the facility by September 2024.
The academy is Meghalaya’s first of its kind indoor training facility, fully sanctioned by the BCCI, built at Madan Kurkalang on land provided by the Lumdaitkhla Dorbar Shnong. It’s proposed to features four full length practice pitches, a swimming pool, gym and dressing rooms to enable year-round training.
Following the surprise visit and flagging of the delay, Sangma wrote to Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) for installation of the transformer as well as approached Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for his intervention to fast-track the entire process. The transformer was installed in a record 12 days, thereby clearing the final hurdle to make the facility functional.
“I had requested the intervention of the Chief Minister to fast-track the completion of the academy. I am grateful that due to his support, the facility is now ready to be inaugurated and used,” James Sangma said.
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities provided by the BCCI, the academy will now enable year-round training and player development, giving the young cricketers of the State the platform they deserve to excel in the sport.
