Shillong, Sept 13: The Meghalaya Editors and Publishers Association (MEPA) has expressed deep sorrow at the demise of Dr. D.D. Lapang, one of Meghalaya’s most distinguished political leaders and the Founding President of the Association.
Dr. Lapang, remembered for his statesmanship and humility, played a pivotal role in shaping the media landscape of the State. Before taking charge as MEPA’s first President, he laid strong foundations for the press fraternity as the Founding Publisher of U Peitngor, a Khasi daily that embodied his commitment to fostering a vibrant and responsible media.
His support for journalists also extended to institutional development. In 1992, during his tenure as Chief Minister, Dr. Lapang ensured that the Shillong Press Club was provided with a permanent premises — a landmark contribution that gave journalists a regular space for interaction and professional growth.
At an emergent meeting convened to mourn his passing, MEPA members paid rich tribute to Dr. Lapang, recalling his invaluable guidance and role as a mentor to the media fraternity. They also highlighted his unique distinction of having served as Chief Minister of Meghalaya on four separate occasions, underscoring his enduring impact on governance and human development in the State.
In a condolence message, MEPA President R. Monarch Shabong, on behalf of all members, conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and expressed profound gratitude for Dr. Lapang’s lifelong contributions to both the media and society. “We pray for eternal peace to the departed soul,” the message read.
