Shillong, Mar 23: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has recommended Rs 10 lakh compensation for the children of a pregnant woman who died at Jowai MCH Hospital, ruling that medical negligence contributed to the 2025 death.
The Commission took suo motu cognizance after a newspaper report on June 6, 2025.
Family members from Jalaphet village, East Jaintia Hills, alleged gross negligence by hospital staff.
A Health and Family Welfare enquiry committee formed on July 7, 2025 found “numbers of deficiencies relating to the death of the patient,” a statement issued by the MHRC secretary L Ch Marak said on Monday.
“The Commission has passed the final order on March 23, 2026 addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary to the government of Meghalaya, Health and Family Welfare department with a recommendation for payment of compensation of Rs 10 lakh only to be paid to the children of the deceased in order to improve their living conditions as they have lost their mother,” it stated.
