Aizawl, July 29: Mizoram is grappling with a severe shortage of essential supplies, particularly fuel, as the Mizoram Oil Tankers Drivers’ Association (MOTDA) has suspended operations since July 19, citing dangerously poor conditions on the Aizawl–Silchar highway, the state’s main lifeline.
Official sources said on Monday that around 150 oil tankers managed to cross Vairengte town on the Assam border by evening. However, despite MOTDA formally calling off its strike on Friday evening, many drivers continue to avoid NH-306, saying the highway remains unsafe. Trips that normally took a day are now stretching into several days.
The crisis is not limited to fuel. Hundreds of trucks carrying essential goods, including food and construction materials, remain stranded along NH-306 and NH-06, intensifying shortages across the state.
Opposition parties, including the Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, and BJP, have slammed the state government, calling the condition of NH-306 and NH-06 the worst in recent years.
