NEHU, BSF hold training on nutrient-rich vegetable cultivation for women in Tura

Tura, May 13: North Eastern Hill University Tura Campus, in collaboration with the Border Security Force Sector Headquarters Dobasipara, organised a capacity-building programme on advanced horticulture technologies for the production of vitamin- and mineral-rich vegetables in Tura on Wednesday.

The programme, held at SHQ BSF Dobasipara, focused on promoting kitchen gardening and healthy food practices among members of the BSF Women Welfare Association using technologies developed by ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research.

DIG Lalit Sharma, who attended as chief guest, praised the Department of Horticulture, NEHU Tura Campus, for conducting skill-based training initiatives benefiting women and local communities.

He encouraged participants to cultivate vegetables in kitchen gardens to improve household nutrition, reduce pesticide exposure, and address malnutrition and “hidden hunger”.

Prof. Jyothi V. Vastrad, Dean of the College of Community Science, Central Agricultural University Tura Campus, attended as guest of honour and highlighted the importance of horticultural farming in ensuring healthy and nutritious food for families, particularly for women and children.

The training programme aimed to familiarise participants with ICAR-IIHR technologies and advanced horticultural practices for cultivating nutrient-rich vegetables in household gardens to support sustainable and healthy livelihoods.

Around 150 women members of the BSF Women Welfare Association received Arka vegetable seed kits sponsored by ICAR-IIHR Bengaluru.

Training sessions were conducted by Prof. C.P. Suresh and Dr. Devesh Tiwari of the Department of Horticulture, NEHU Tura Campus. The sessions focused on practical horticultural farming techniques and nutrition-oriented vegetable cultivation.

BSF Women Welfare Association president Puneet Sharma thanked ICAR-IIHR Director Dr. T.K. Behera and Principal Scientist and NEH Region nodal officer Dr. T. Shakthivel for supporting the initiative.
