Guwahati, May 13: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) on Wednesday expressed profound grief over the killing of Baptist church leaders in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district and strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous act” against religious leaders working to uphold peace amid ongoing unrest in the state.
In a statement, the CBCI said it was “heartbroken” over the ambush on two vehicles carrying leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) between Kotzim and Kotlen villages in Kangpokpi district earlier in the day, in which innocent lives were lost and several others injured.
“We strongly condemn this heinous act committed against religious leaders who have remained a vital source of hope and strength during these difficult times of social unrest,” the statement said.
The apex Catholic body said violence would only “deepen wounds, prolong suffering, and weaken the bonds that unite communities.”
Echoing the appeal made by Archbishop of Imphal, Most Reverend Dr. Linus Neli, the CBCI urged all communities and groups to refrain from violence and retaliation and instead embrace dialogue, reconciliation, forgiveness, restraint and peaceful coexistence.
The organisation also appealed to authorities to act with “wisdom, fairness and sensitivity” to restore peace and rebuild confidence among communities in the conflict-hit state.
“In this dark hour, the CBCI stands in prayerful solidarity with the bereaved families,” the statement added, while praying for peace, healing and reconciliation in Manipur.
