Tura, July 26: The Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) and the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) – NEHU Tura Campus Cell have called for a long-term strategy for the campus’s development which must begin by strengthening its administrative backbone.
At present, NEHU Tura Campus reportedly has only three regular permanent administrative staff members. The unions argue that such a severe shortfall is throttling the campus’s potential and damaging the morale of students and staff alike.
Despite nearing its 30th anniversary next year, the Tura Campus remains grossly underdeveloped, with stagnation in infrastructure, limited student amenities, faculty shortages across departments, and a critical lack of administrative manpower.
The students’ union have jointly urged the Pro Vice-Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Tura Campus, to immediately initiate recruitment for long-pending vacant administrative posts. They have called on the NEHU administration to treat the issue with urgency and begin the recruitment process without delay.
The two student bodies highlighted that the acute shortage of administrative staff is severely impacting the smooth functioning and development of the campus, affecting academic operations, student welfare, and overall institutional productivity.
They raised concerns over the burden on the existing minimal staff, leading to significant delays in vital processes such as scholarship disbursement, issuance of certificates, administrative correspondence, and timely redressal of student grievances. The lack of manpower, they said, is creating a “void in the decision-making and implementation process,” resulting in poor departmental coordination and stalled progress.
The vacant posts identified for immediate filling include: Deputy Registrar, Personal Assistant to the Deputy Registrar, Assistant Registrar (Administration), Section Officer, Assistant, Upper Division Clerk (UDC) and Lower Division Clerk (LDC)
“The current situation is significantly hindering the development and smooth functioning of the campus,” said Chakram D. Sangma, President of the PGSU. “A competent and fully-fledged administrative team is essential for efficient record-keeping, execution of campus activities, and prompt student services.”
Chean Jakrik A. Sangma, President of the GSU-NEHU Tura Campus Cell, added, “Effective recruitment will not only ease the burden on current staff but also boost productivity and contribute to a more professional and organized environment. A strong administration is key to enhancing academic growth and enabling better support for seminars, workshops, and research activities.”
The student bodies said they are hopeful of a swift and positive response from the university.
