Nine Nepali nationals dead, seven injured in coal mine explosion
Shillong, Feb 13: The Embassy of Nepal in India has expressed deep condolences following the death of nine Nepali citizens in a coal mine explosion in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on February 5, 2026.
In a statement, the Embassy confirmed that the victims lost their lives in the blast and extended sympathies to the bereaved families, praying for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
Seven other Nepali nationals were injured in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The Embassy said it is closely monitoring their condition and has wished them a speedy recovery.
Officials stated that the Embassy is in constant coordination with India’s Ministry of External Affairs, as well as the local administration and police authorities, to ensure medical care, necessary services, and compensation for the victims and their families.

According to the statement, the coal mine where the explosion occurred was reportedly being operated illegally. The Embassy cautioned that working in unauthorized mining operations often complicates rescue efforts and makes it difficult to secure compensation and other benefits in the event of accidents.
Issuing a public advisory, the Embassy urged Nepali citizens to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to unknown agents or intermediaries offering employment in unsafe or unauthorized locations. It advised workers to verify details about employers, wages, and benefits, and to complete all necessary legal and procedural formalities before accepting jobs.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks associated with illegal coal mining activities in parts of Meghalaya.
