Shillong, May 18: With the structural work of the New Assembly building now completed, focus has shifted to finishing the interiors and premises, with the goal of making it ready for the Autumn session of the State Assembly.
“About 85 to 87 percent—almost 90 percent—of the physical work has been completed. The interior finishing work takes time, but at least the structure is done. We can now proceed with the interiors as we are safe from rain,” said Meghalaya Speaker Thomas A Sangma.
Providing further updates, he stated, “The interior work can now begin. All the tender processes, work orders, and selection of implementing agencies are being finalised. Very soon, the interior construction will begin.”

He also mentioned that the beautification of the premises will be taken up now.
When asked about any cost escalation, the Speaker clarified, “Whatever cost escalation occurred earlier—that’s it. No further escalation has been seen, although there is a separate sanction for interior furniture. As far as the structure is concerned, there has been no additional cost beyond what was previously reported.”
On the timeline for the project’s completion, Sangma said, “Let’s hope and pray we complete it before the Autumn session, but it also depends—interior work takes time, and we still have furnishing, painting, and the premises to complete.”
