Guwahati, April 28: Details emerging from the investigation into the fatal Mathgharia road accident indicate that the victims and the accused driver had spent several hours at a rooftop bar before the crash that killed three young women.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Bora, addressing a press briefing on Tuesday, said CCTV footage and GPS data helped reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the accident.
According to police, the group—driver Shamim Ahmed and three women—were at a rooftop bar in Rudraksh Mall, Bhangagarh, for nearly five hours. CCTV footage confirmed their presence, and the total bill amounted to around Rs 19,000.
Investigators said the vehicle remained parked near the mall from around 11:00 PM before moving again at approximately 3:00 AM. GPS data shows the car then travelled along key routes, including GS Road, RG Baruah Road, and Mother Teresa Road.
Police said the vehicle reached speeds of up to 130 km/h. At the time of the crash, around 4:02 AM in Mathgharia, it was travelling at 96 km/h when it rammed into a stationary truck.
The injured victims were initially taken to Gate Hospital, while the driver was not found at the scene. Officials said the driver’s door was open, suggesting he fled immediately after the collision.
The vehicle is registered to Pankaj Kumar Dutta and had been rented to Bhargav Deka, from whom Shamim Ahmed had taken it earlier that day.
Following the incident, Shamim allegedly fled to Shillong, where he altered his appearance to evade identification, before moving through Sivasagar and Dibrugarh. Police said he was attempting to escape towards Arunachal Pradesh, but has since been detained.
The truck driver has also been arrested. Investigations are ongoing into multiple aspects, including speeding, parking violations, and possible misuse of a private vehicle.
