Shillong, May 7: NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the party’s difficult phase in Assam would not hold it back, stressing that “courage to take the first step” defines an organisation.
Asked what went wrong for the NPP in Assam, Sangma said, “Nothing went wrong. What is important to note is that we don’t shy away from giving a shot. We have the courage to move forward. In many locations, I remembered in Manipur when we first started off, we got two people who joined us and that is how every long journey starts with the first step.”
He said challenges were part of building leadership. “I think what is important is to have the courage to be able to take that step in spite of all challenges and difficulties that one may face and that’s what determines an organization and that is what determines leadership,” he said.
“For us, yes, we had a very difficult phase in Assam but that doesn’t deter us because what is important is we have taken the courage and taken the step forward and more importantly we will learn from situations that unfolded and make sure that we improve and become better in the future,” Sangma added.
On the BJP’s assertion that it would lead the Meghalaya government in 2028 after its wins in West Bengal and Assam, the Chief Minister said public mandate would be the final factor.
“Any party can say anything, that is their desire, anybody can give any statement so they are free to give their statement but at the end of the day it is the people who will decide and it is the numbers that will decide. We have seen the numbers in the past and every party is free to organize, so it is okay every party has the democratic right to say whatever they want, I have no comments,” he said.
