Tura, Oct 25: A one-day free shooting camp was organised by the Shooting Association of West Garo Hills on Saturday to familiarise school children with the basics of shooting sports and the equipment used by professional athletes.
The event, held at the Don Bosco School Indoor Shooting Range in Tura, aimed to promote shooting as a sport and create awareness about the upcoming National Games 2027, which will be hosted by Meghalaya.
More than 30 students from various schools in and around Tura participated in the camp, which served not only as an introductory session but also as a talent hunt for young aspiring shooters.
The organisers plan to identify promising talents and provide them with further training and exposure in the sport.
The indoor range at Don Bosco School, Tura, is equipped with facilities for 10-metre air pistol and air rifle practice, while outdoor training uses .22 and .23 caliber rifles and pistols at a 50-metre range.
Speaking to Hub News, Shooting Association of West Garo Hills Publicity Secretary Walsall M. Momin said, “We have talented youngsters but we don’t have a platform to nurture and groom them. Camps like this help us connect directly with interested candidates who can be guided and trained for higher-level competitions.”
Momin further informed that anyone aged 10 years and above can enroll in the association’s training sessions, with no upper age limit.
A young participant at the camp expressed excitement after trying out the sport for the first time, saying, “We have come to know about shooting sports, and it interests me a lot. I personally like the rifle.”
The Association hopes to continue organising such camps regularly to build a strong base of athletes from the region and prepare them for future state and national-level competitions.
