Guwahati, Feb 3: One person died and at least 122 were hospitalised in the Diphu Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday after suffering from food poisoning suspected to be caused due to consuming Biriyani distributed during an event at the same hospital last Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had inaugurated the first academic session of the MBBC course in the newly constructed hospital in Karbi Anglong capital during which, the attendees –about 500 from different parts of the district — were provided food packets of Biriyani and other food items.
“It is suspected that the people who have consumed those packets have started falling sick. People have begun to come to the hospital since Tuesday evening,” a doctor in the hospital said.
The deceased has been identified as Kangbua Be who hailed from Bokoliaghat, about 53 km from Diphu.
Meanwhile, a team of experts have been rushed from Assam capital Guwahati to Diphu MCH to control the situation.
Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council CEM Tuliram Ronghang also paif visit last Tuesday night itself and assured the patients proper medical facilities will be provided to them.
