Over 700 students attend career guidance seminar in West Jaintia Hills

Jowai, Aug 23: More than 700 students from across West Jaiñtia Hills participated in a Career Guidance Seminar organised on Friday by the office of the Deputy Commissioner at the District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai, in collaboration with SPM IAS Academy, Guwahati.

The seminar aimed at inspiring and guiding young minds to explore future career opportunities and was attended by Local MLA and MUDA Chairman Wailadmiki Shylla, Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh, Superintendent of Police Jaspal Singh Dhanoa, District & Sessions Judge N.A. Khan and other dignitaries.

In his welcome address, Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh urged students to make the most of the knowledge and inspiration shared by the speakers.

Highlighting the need for career counselling, MLA Wailadmiki Shylla said many young people remain uncertain about their future even after completing their education. He stressed that unemployment today affects not just the uneducated but also the educated, making it vital for students to identify their strengths, talents and aspirations.

“No dream is too small,” Shylla reminded the students, urging them to make wise decisions, manage time effectively and stay updated with the world’s rapid changes. He also presented a cheque of ₹1 lakh to singer Deiwitawan Synnah in recognition of his contribution to music and his effort to set up a new music school.

District & Sessions Judge N.A. Khan spoke on the true purpose of education, noting that it should not be confined to academics but should ignite curiosity and enable informed life choices. Citing Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s Ignited Minds, he urged students to pursue opportunities that match their talents, highlighting the growing scope of law as a career.

SP Jaspal Singh Dhanoa encouraged students to differentiate between a job and a career, describing a career as work that becomes passion. He stressed that true learning goes beyond textbooks, urging students to engage with life experiences and use the seminar to better understand themselves.

The sessions were conducted by Hridesh Kumar Shrotriya, Director of SPM & Lalan’s Guwahatiand his team, who guided students with valuable insights on career planning and opportunities.
