Shillong, Oct 15: Hours after a major fire broke out in a four storey building in Police Bazar, which started at around 1.20 PM on Saturday afternoon was doused after 15 hours.
The fire incident has claimed one life while one fire service constable rushed to the hospital due to suffocation.
Fire service constable has been identified as Alexander Mukhim.
There is also a report that one person still remains missing.
The deceased person has been identified as Sampat Singh Jangir, a manager of the Bhajanlals.
Soon after the incident, 10 fire brigades from Mairang, Umiam training centre, Nongpoh and Jowai rushed to the spot to control the fire.
According to the neighbours, the fire was very dangerous.
The ground floor of the building is the office of the Amit Singhania.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma have asked the District Administration to assess the damages and to assist the families affected by the incident.
Taking to X, CM wrote, “Concerned about the fire incident that occurred today in Jail Road, Police Bazar, Shillong that caused huge loss to life and property. Have asked the District Administration to assess the damages and to assist the families affected by the incident.”
