Shillong, April 24: Following a review meeting with the District Election Officer, Returning Officer and police officials on Monday to ensure the smooth running of the polls, Meghalaya’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor has informed that preparations for the upcoming Sohiong polls are currently ongoing.

Kharkongor stated that the intensity of electioneering has been relatively low so far, and that five companies of CAPF have been allotted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Election Commission. Also, 60 arms have been deposited and five cases have been registered under CrPC, with 24 people bound down under the preventive section.

Three nakas have been set up in the area and eight non-available warrants have been executed. Sector officers and zonal officers have also been visiting the polling stations.

The Sohiong constituency has been divided into two sectors and six zones, with over 34,000 eligible voters and 63 polling stations. The CEO himself will inspect the polling stations, which are spread across a large area from the border with Ri-Bhoi district up to the border of Eastern West Khasi Hills, Mairang.
