Shillong, Aug 14: Trinamool Congress (TMC) State Chief Charles Pyngrope has compared political leadership to captaining a ship, warning that without a capable leader, a party is bound to fail.
“In the context of the current state of the Congress, a weak captain will not sail the ship but sink it,” Pyngrope said. “Everything rises and falls on leadership. If you have weak leadership, your boat will not sail—you’re going to sink.”

His remarks come amid the Congress’s steep decline in Meghalaya politics, where the party no longer holds a single seat in the 60-member Assembly. The slide follows the resignation of its sole MLA, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, who recently joined the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
Pyngrope, a former Congress leader himself, clarified that his comments were not directed at any individual. He acknowledged that MLAs may switch parties for personal or constituency-related reasons. “There are many factors that determine the switch of any MLA under the anti-defection rules, so that I won’t say. But I reiterate—any party’s survival depends on its leadership. If the leadership is weak, you will see members leaving,” he said.
Despite the party’s current state, Pyngrope said it is premature to write off the Congress in Meghalaya. “It is unlikely that the Congress shop will be closed,” he added.
