Siju PHC in South Garo Hills receives National Quality Certification, setting a benchmark for rural healthcare in Meghalaya

Must read

Tura, Aug 20: In a big boost to Meghalaya’s public healthcare system, the Siju Primary Health Centre (PHC) in South Garo Hills has been awarded the prestigious National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) Certification by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Run under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model by BAKDIL, a local non-profit, Siju PHC secured an exceptional score of 97.14% in a rigorous assessment conducted on July 21–22 by NHSRC-empanelled experts. This makes it only the second PHC in the Garo Hills region—after Babadam PHC, also managed by BAKDIL—to achieve the certification.

The NQAS framework, developed by the National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC) under the Quality Council of India, assesses facilities on critical parameters such as patient care, infection control, cleanliness, and service delivery.

When BAKDIL took over Siju PHC 16 years ago, the centre faced severe infrastructural and service delivery challenges. Over the years, through consistent investment in capacity building and a strong patient-first approach, it has been transformed into a model of rural healthcare.

“This certification is not just an award—it is recognition of our ethics, responsibility, and unwavering belief that quality healthcare is the right of every person,” a statement issued by BAKDIL said. “It reaffirms our commitment to service, transparency, inclusivity, and excellence.”

The milestone was made possible through coordinated efforts by BAKDIL’s health team, the Joint Directorate Quality Committee (JDQC), the office of the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), the Meghalaya Health Systems Strengthening Project (MHSSP), and the National Health Mission (NHM).

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the entire healthcare team at Siju PHC. Their dedication has turned this success into a beacon of hope, inspiring all health institutions in Meghalaya to strive for excellence and help transform the state’s public health system into one rooted in justice, compassion, and quality care,” the statement said.
