Shillong, April 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday inaugurated a new Indoor Sports Hall and a range of upgraded amenities at St Mary’s College, Shillong, developed with support under the centrally sponsored Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA 2.0).
Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and MLA M Ampareen Lyngdoh were present at the event, along with senior officials from the state education department.
Addressing the gathering, Sangma highlighted the role of missionary and denomination-run institutions in shaping Meghalaya’s education landscape, saying their commitment continues to inspire the government. He noted that the state extends financial support of around ₹1,200 crore annually to such institutions, adding that the investments are beginning to show tangible outcomes.
Commending St Mary’s College for maintaining academic standards while promoting holistic student development, the Chief Minister stressed the need to re-centre policy thinking around students. “In trying to address systemic issues, we often lose sight of the student. When we brought the focus back to learners, we began to see change,” he said, urging stakeholders to keep student welfare at the core of decision-making.
Calling education a “complex sector with layered challenges,” Sangma said the government remains committed to long-term reforms despite inevitable hurdles. “The impact of decisions in education takes time, but we are determined to pursue transformative change,” he added.

The newly inaugurated infrastructure includes an indoor sports facility aimed at strengthening extracurricular engagement, alongside renovated campus amenities and equipment procured through RUSA 2.0 grants.
RUSA 2.0, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, focuses on improving access, equity, and quality in state higher education institutions. The scheme has played a key role in upgrading infrastructure, integrating technology in classrooms, and enhancing faculty capacity across colleges, particularly in underserved regions.
