Tura, May 25: In today’s competitive job landscape where simply earning a degree is no longer enough, fresh graduates often struggle to secure jobs, not due to a lack of talent, but because they lack the industry-specific skills and exposure that employers now demand. Companies are increasingly looking for job-ready candidates, those who not only possess academic knowledge but also demonstrate proficiency in digital tools, data literacy, problem-solving, and communication.
Sumanjuri Rajkhowa, an accomplished airport Human Resource Officer and a proud alumna of NEHU Tura, shared with Hub News the valuable career advice for youth across the Northeast, especially Garo Hills, and how students and young professionals can prepare themselves for successful careers in Human Resources and other corporate sectors.

Sumanjuri Rajkhowa was in Tura to attend the SYNERGO’s 25 and the HR Conclave cum Alumni Meet, organized by the Department of Management and the Placement & Counselling Cell of NEHU Tura Campus, held on May 23-24. At the event, she was also a distinguished speaker on a panel discussion, where she shared her expertise and experiences with students and fellow alumni.
Talking to Hub News, Sumanjuri reflected on her own experience of completing an MBA at NEHU Tura between 2019 and 2021 and encouraged youth not to hesitate in stepping out of their comfort zones. She emphasized the importance of gaining practical skills and real-world exposure.
She pointed out that while the Northeast has a wealth of educated youth, many hesitate to explore opportunities beyond general degree courses or their hometowns. “Exposure and specialization are key,” she said and advised students to pursue advanced skills in areas like HR, data analytics, and management tools.
She recommended that students learn essential tools such as Advanced Excel, Power BI, ERP systems like SAP, and AI platforms like ChatGPT to stay competitive in today’s job market. Explaining that basic computer knowledge is no longer enough, Sumanjuri urged students to take advantage of free and affordable online courses to enhance their skills.
On interview preparation, she shared insights from her HR background, stressing the importance of communication skills, confidence, and demonstrating a willingness to learn beyond academic qualifications.

She encouraged youth to be open to relocating temporarily for work or internships to gain valuable experience, assuring them that returning home with enhanced skills can greatly benefit their communities.
She also shared examples of peers from regions like Garo Hills who have thrived by gaining exposure in metro cities and returning with new knowledge. To help youth better understand job market opportunities, she advised attending career webinars, seminars, and networking with alumni.
Concluding her talk, she reminded students that success depends on mindset and perseverance. “Believe in yourself, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to take the first step,” she emphasized.
