Tension prevails in Manipur’s Churachandpur, 2 killed, scores injured

Imphal, Feb 16: Tension continues to prevail in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after fresh protests broke out last evening, which had turned violent.  In wake of the violence, the mobile internet in Churachandpur has been shut down for five days. The civil society groups of Churachandpur have called for a shut down today against killing of civilians last night.

Two persons have been killed and over 25 injured in a clash with the security forces after hundreds of people came out in Manipur’s Kuki-Zo tribes-dominated Churachandpur district to protest against the suspension of a head constable after a selfie of him with “armed miscreants” went viral.

The police said there is tension in the district.

Protesters were seen surrounding the office of the Superintendent of Police, demanding the reinstatement of the head constable, Siamlalpaul, who took the selfie in a bunker of “armed miscreants” and “village defence volunteers” atop a hill.

According to government sources many key government properties like the officer of the deputy commissioner, Superintendent of police have been ransacked, vandalised and there have been cases of arson of vehicles and even deputy commissioner’s residence was targeted, police sources added.
